Tournament Rules

Last updated: [Effective date]

These are the general rules for tournaments run on PUB (“Pick Your Ball”). Each tournament and division page shows its own format, scoring and timings. Where a page differs from these rules, the page applies. On the day, the organiser's and referee's decisions are final.

1. Rules of play

Matches follow the [USA Pickleball Official Rulebook / [governing body] rules, current edition], except where a division page or the organiser says otherwise. Paddles and balls must be [approved by USA Pickleball]; the tournament ball is [brand and model].

2. Eligibility

  • Each division can be limited by gender, age (worked out from your date of birth on [the tournament start date]) and rating. Keep your PUB profile accurate.
  • You may enter more than one division in a tournament, but you cannot be in the same division twice or with two different partners.
  • Organisers may move or decline entries that do not meet the requirements. Refunds follow the Refund & Cancellation Policy.

3. DUPR

  • DUPR-rated divisions need every player to connect a DUPR account to PUB (from your profile). Entries stay pending, and out of the draw, until all players on the team have connected.
  • Rating-limited divisions use your DUPR rating at the time of registration [or at the registration close date]. Some divisions need a DUPR+ subscription; the division page says so.
  • Results from DUPR-rated divisions are submitted to DUPR after the tournament.

4. Registration, partners and seeding

  • Your place is confirmed once the entry is paid and accepted. Unpaid entries do not hold a place.
  • You can change partner on an unpaid entry from your cart. After payment, partner changes need the organiser’s approval, up to [registration close / [N] days before the event].
  • Seeds are based on [average DUPR rating of the team], set by the organiser before the draw.

5. Formats and scoring

  • Most divisions start with round-robin pools, followed by knockout rounds for the teams that qualify. Pool sizes, how many teams go through and the knockout rounds are shown on the division page.
  • Games are played to [11 points, win by 2] unless the division page says otherwise (for example, a single game to 15 or best of three).
  • Pool positions are decided by [matches won, then head-to-head, then point difference, then points won]. Ties beyond that are decided by the organiser.
  • Scores are recorded on PUB by [the referee / the winning team / the desk] right after each match. Check the score before you leave the court.

6. Check-in, court calls and walkovers

  • Check in at the tournament desk by the reporting time shown on the division page. Teams that haven’t checked in may be left out of the schedule.
  • Courts are assigned live by the desk. When your match is called, report to the court within [5] minutes.
  • A team that is not ready [10] minutes after being called may be given a walkover (match lost) at the referee’s discretion.
  • Allow for rest between matches as set by the organiser. Ask the desk if you need a break for medical reasons.

7. Conduct

  • Respect opponents, partners, referees, volunteers and venue staff. Abuse, cheating or dangerous play can lead to a warning, a point or game penalty, or disqualification without refund.
  • Line calls on your side of the court are made by you in good faith. If you can’t agree, ask for a referee.
  • Wear non-marking court shoes and follow venue rules.

8. Safety, photos and disputes

  • You play at your own risk. Warm up, hydrate, and stop if you are injured. First aid is available at [the tournament desk].
  • Organisers may take photos and videos at events for results and promotion. Tell the desk if you would rather not be featured.
  • Raise disputes with the referee straight away, before the next point or match starts. The tournament director’s decision is final.
